If you’re a fan of all-things steampunk, chances are you’ll be won over in an instant by Steam Tower. There’s no denying the fact that in terms of looks alone, Steam Tower nails it in a big way. Or should that be, NetEnt nailed it in a big way…having built and launched in in 2015. But given that these things are about way more than looks alone, how does Steam Tower rank when put to the test?

Well, the story follows a plucky young hero on a mission to save a damsel in distress from a rather unpleasant dragon, using his steam-powered (of course) harpoon to slowly but surely climb the tower. And you’ll want to wish him well along his way, as the higher he climbs, the better-off you come out of the deal financially…maybe.

Along with the dragon’s eye, the tower, the maiden and hero, symbols include playing card values from jack to ace. The graphics are gorgeous to look at, all 15 paylines are in play at all times and coin sizes can be selected between 0.01 and 1.00. You can also alter the bet size from 1 to 10, before grabbing your harpoon and getting busy with the climbing.

Payout & bonus rounds

The biggest normal-play jackpot available comes by landing five dragon’s eyes in a row, which is good for a colossal 2,000X your wager. Slightly less life-changing is the lowest normal play win, which comes out at 3X your bet for hitting three jacks in a row.

Wild symbols take the form of our hero’s steam-powered harpoon and can take the place of any other symbol in the game. It’s during these free spins that you begin climbing the tower – one step up for every additional wild you hit. And of course, more wilds mean more free spins – two per wild. You can also climb one level instantly by hitting the full-profile picture of the hero himself – the slot’s stacked wild.

There are 16 levels to climb in total, with tasty win multipliers at each level. Floor two is good for a 2X multiplier, make it to level five for 3X or clamber your way all the way to the top for a whopping 1,000X multiplier. When your free spins run out, you lose your grip and plummet back to earth with a splat.

On the whole, Steam Tower scores top marks when it comes to its hugely enjoyable free-spins tower-climbing feature – the rest just isn’t quite so impressive. There’s nothing inherently wrong with it, it’s just the fact that normal gameplay gets very dull, very quickly – unless you start climbing. Still, more than worth a few spins and great for steampunk fans.
